“Unplugged in the Amazon - Grateful!”
If you’re looking to truly disconnect, this is the perfect place. There’s no WiFi, no mobile signal, and it’s about 20 minutes away from the city. What you’ll mostly hear are chirping birds, buzzing insects, the occasional bark of a dog or crow of a rooster—and if you’re unlucky, some noisy guests in the nearby cabanas. Thankfully, we had most of the place to ourselves during our stay. Martha was an incredible host who went above and beyond to help us plan our trip to Puerto Nariño. We had Mauricio as our English-speaking guide, and he was fantastic—waiting for us right at the port when we arrived. On our first day, we did the sloth tour with him, and the next day we did the monkey tour independently, since it takes place on another island. Because it was the wet season, everything was flooded, so both tours were done entirely by boat—lucky us! During the dry season, you have to walk, and just imagining trekking through the Amazon heat and humidity makes me lightheaded. We spotted sloths, capybaras, countless monkeys, and even piranhas. Although we didn’t book the dolphin tour, we were lucky enough to see dolphins twice—once on the way to Peru for the sloth tour, and again on our way back to Leticia. Since we stayed for 6 days and 5 nights, we needed to do laundry. In the city, it was 10,000 COP per kilo for 24-hour service, and 14,000 COP for 8-hour express. On our last day, we squeezed in a visit to Parque Ecológico Mundo Amazónico, where we learned about Amazonian plants and trees. I highly recommend doing this first—it’s a great way to understand what you’re seeing on your other tours. Tips: • Choose Cristal bottled water if you have a sensitive stomach—I had trouble with San Jose. • If you miss the bus (3,500 COP per person), the tuk-tuk costs 30,000 COP one way. • Don’t expect much for breakfast—it’s usually scrambled eggs, two tortillas, coffee, and a piece of fruit. We bought extra bread in the city.

“A real sense of living in the rainforest”
We really loved our visit to the Amazon – the rainforest, the river, the people all surpassed our expectations, and the heat, humidity and mosquitos were better than anticipated. It really should be on everyone’s list of destinations! We also enjoyed the ‘buzz’ of Leticia ….but are glad that we stayed outside of town at Palmayacu. Sleeping in the edge of the jungle gave us a real sense of the environment (even if it meant being woken by cockerels and dogs barking each morning). The accommodation is as expected in such a remote location – cabins with cold showers – but we loved it. Marta and her staff are all lovely and helpful (although a couple of misunderstandings would have been avoided if we spoke better Spanish). Breakfast is good, with fruit and eggs prepared as you wish. We also used the cooking facilities. Staying at Palmayacu gives you easy access to a number of rainforest activities (walks, zip-wires, bird watching etc) and there is a basic restaurant and a couple of stores nearby. Leticia has some decent restaurants (even for veggies like us) and it’s easy to get into town on a ‘collectivo’ or tuk tuk.
