Traditional Japanese inn in a quiet residential area of Kyoto run by Tome and her husband, who both speak excellent English, and go out of their way to be welcoming and attentive hosts . The building is beautifully maintained, full of antiques and has a charming central garden courtyard. The daily breakfasts were fine dining standard - the best meals we had in Kyoto- sensational. Tome gave us daily tips on places to visit - places out of the way that we wouldn't have found otherwise, helped with a daily itinerary that suited the weather, and booked local restaurants for us in the evening. She even washed some of our clothes without charge. If we come back again, I will book Ryokan Mugan again.

Our stay at Ryokan Mugen was truly exceptional. Our host, Tome, was incredibly warm, welcoming, and charming, and made us feel at home from the very first moment. The atmosphere of the ryokan, the beautiful room, and the peaceful location were all absolutely perfect. Tome also recommended several local places to eat, and every recommendation turned out to be amazing — some of the best experiences we had in Kyoto. The next time we return to Kyoto, staying here will be an absolute must. We highly recommend Ryokan Mugen and sincerely hope to come back again soon.

Simply one of the best stays we’ve had anywhere in all our travelling and certainly a highlight of our trip to Japan! Tome truly went above and beyond to ensure we got the most out of our short visit to Kyoto, including suggesting (and arranging) our sight seeing and dining options! Amazing ryokan. The room, breakfast, location are all exceptional but what makes this one of the best places we have stayed in 45 years of travel is the hosts. Tome-san makes it seem like you are staying with a friend. Her warmth, advice, recommendations are superb. We just wished to have stayed longer. We will though return. If in Kyoto this is the place to stay.

Beautiful room, breakfast was great with a bit of variation each day. Nice quiet area with a lot of local restaurants and handy for public transport to go anywhere else. Tome is the best, very helpful and. friendly and made the stay all the more enjoyable, she gave us plenty of recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing which always hit the spot.

Incredibly privileged to have stayed here. Tome was the perfect host & we enjoyed every aspect of her beautiful Ryokan. She was there to greet us when our taxi pulled up & couldn't have done more for us during our short stay. We wanted a traditional Ryokan experience and couldn't have asked for a more comfortable, spacious, beautifully kept room or surroundings. A must stay if you are in Kyoto!

Beautiful Ryoken & lovely room. Very good size with comfy beds and lovely bathroom. Good amenities provided. Tome is an excellent host and helped us plan our 3 days in Kyoto according to the weather explaining which buses to get to see what we wanted to see. Tome’s hobby room, a beautiful whiskey bar, was a fantastic extra!

“The best stay in Japan and the best host ever.”

If you get the chance to experience a stay in Mugen Ryokan then you should most definitely take it, our only regret was that we only scheduled one night here. Tome is a natural at making you feel at home and welcome. Not only is the Ryokan immaculate but Tome goes above and beyond to make your stay here is special. Whatever interests you may have or cuisines you may want to try, she'll more than likely know someone who can make it happen as she seems to know everyone in Kyoto! She managed to reserve us a table at an amazing restaurant where we were the only tourists and the food was absolutely incredible. The next day, she had a mini itinerary planned for us before we had to catch our train and let us use the bicycles so we could quickly get to all the places. If we ever make it back to Japan, we are definitely going to spend more time here.

Tome’s Ryokan was absolutely delightful. I couldn’t fault it in any way. I had read all the reviews and it sounded so amazing that I booked it. It was just as good as the reviews and even better! From the gorgeous rooms and comfy beds, to the incredible traditional breakfasts that were the highlight of my whole stay in Japan, to Tome’s hospitality, her incredible walking distance restaurants (one was a chefs choice dinner, only 6 guests and cooked in front of us!) to having long chats with her in her private speak easy and sipping sake! The whole trip was just wonderful!!! Thank you Tome for an incredible and memorable stay. Hopefully we will be back one day or you’ll be back in Australia for some Vegemite toast with us!! ❤️🙏
