A Buddhist temple lodging accommodation, 高野山 宿坊 熊谷寺 -Koyasan Shukubo Kumagaiji- lies amid mountains in the sacred Koyasan area. It features classic Japanese architecture and a tranquil atmosphere, adjoining a temple built in 837. The property serves traditional vegetarian meals. Featuring minimalist lines and a serene beauty, rooms come with a tatami (woven-straw) floor and traditional futon bedding. A TV and a low table are provided. Bathroom and toilet are shared with other guests. Certain rooms feature garden views. 高野山 宿坊 熊谷寺 -Koyasan Shukubo Kumagaiji- offers free WiFi in all rooms. A limited number of free tablet rental is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Luggage can be stored at the property at no extra charge. This was such a special experience! The temple lodgings have everything you could want, including an onsen! The hosts are so lovely and accommodating and it is such a peaceful and quiet place to stay. The temple and the garden are just beautiful, the rooms lovely and quite spacious, and the dining experience was delicious and morning ceremony was so special too! The experience to stay within temple lodgings can be quite expensive, but it is so worth it. And the fact that isn’t includes both dinner and breakfast (which were amazing) makes it good value. But the experience really is priceless - it felt an honour to stay there. It was also so close to the cemeteries so made them easy to explore at dusk/ night and be back in time for the temple curfew. Thank you to everyone there for a beautiful stay.

“Wonderful stay at a monastery”
This was an incredible experience. The food was traditional and tasty and I loved how they explained it all to us. The rooms were large with a lounge area we could also use. The shared onsen was really good. It was amazing to see the morning ceremony. We loved our stay, thank you so much.

Very special experience, so quiet and relaxing! The meals were delicious, all vegeterian food and fresh products. I was very to be bale to bathe after this cold day.

Koyasan is a very special place to be. We had the privilege of attending the fire ceremony, which was a memorable experience. The food was delicious, and the room was clean and spacious.

“100% recommend! 🥣”
Great location - only short walk to Okunoin, very close to the bus stop. I stayed in one of the higher-grade room, so I can't generalize, but my experience was way above any expectations. Amazing meals, fresh ingredients, local dishes, and the best miso soups I've ever had. Beautiful halls and ceremony spaces, my room was very big and cozy as well, with kotatsu and heater. Staff was kind and patient, explaining things in simple English and preparing a sheet with instructions just in case.

“A special experience”
Very friendly staff. We were able to check in early to get changed and leave our bags in our room before leaving again for the day. We enjoyed the free onsen in the evening. My wife has a large tattoo, but the staff were happy for her to use the onsen without covering up, which was much appreciated. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent and we slept very comfortably on the tatamis. Altogether a very peaceful and quiet stay. The location is great too. There is a bus stop nearby and Okunoin Cemetery is in easy walking distance, so perfect for doing the night tour.

I expected more information about life, buddism. It was only dinner and breakfast without any explanation . Definetly it is not worth the price.

They were extremely welcoming polite and helpful with any queries we had. Would highly recommend them and wouldn’t hesitate to go back and stay again for a very traditional Japanese hotel.

Dinner was perfect. Breakfast too early, about 7 am. All the cafes open at 11 am. So you could eat another breakfast :). Very beautiful garden at temple. After dinner you could go to onsen.

great temple lodging with friendly monks . Wonderful vegan breakfast and dinner. Opportunity to attend morning prayers if you wish at 6am and also use temple onsen. Excellent location for night cemetery tour which id highly recommend. Located at the less busy end of the mountain resort.
