This is such a special experience, we thank the temple for their hospitality and everything was top noch (specially the food). Location was great, after the town's gate and close by everything. You could left your bags before check in and after check out.

My room view was great. I could see the tower of Dando garan. Even during the night. The temple manager provided very attentive service. The food was cooked by an 83y chef. All the guests were very lucky to taste it. I can say the rice was just right to cook it. I finished all of the rice they provided. Also, the vegetable meal just matched the rice. Everything is perfect.

“Amazing but cold experience”
The temple was almost empty (6 guests) so it was great! Our host welcomed us on arrival and showed us around. The food was delicious, especially the dinner! Onsen was much needed as we travelled in winter. Heating in the room was sufficient and a thermos with hot tea and a cookie a nice surprise. Morning prayer was a highlight and the location was peaceful but still walking distance everywhere.

“Wonderful vegetarian dinner. A true experience. No shower facilities in the morning just a communal washroom.”
The room was lovely. The onsen/bathroom was superb for warming you on a chilly day. Dinner was exceptional.

Staying here was a very meaningful experience for us. We were warmly welcomed by the monks, who did everything to make our stay comfortable. I highly recommend including a stay at Hojoin to your trip. Do be aware that staying here in winter comes with its challenges, and that the temperature in the temple buildings and in the rooms is hardly higher than the outside temperature, so prepare accordingly. There was a small gas heater in our rooms that could warm it up relatively quickly but we didn't feel comfortable leaving it on the whole night.

We had a wonderful stay! Our room was nice and cozy, the food was delicious and the bath was amazing on a cold winter day. Joining the morning prayer was a great experience too. It was very cold inside, but that's to be expected with such an old building. We had a heater in our room and the futons kept us warm all night. There were only a few other people when we stayed, so it was very quiet and peaceful.

The monastery is simply amazing, you really breathe an authentic atmosphere with very simple and minimal facilities and furniture. We have had both locally made dinner and breakfast with vegetarian products and the prayer at 6 a.m. was an immersive experience of a part of the Buddhist monks living there.

Staying in a nearly 900-year-old Buddhist temple in Koyasan was absolutely incredible. We stayed in a larger room, which was super spacious and beautifully designed in a traditional style, with garden views from two sides. This place is truly special – the atmosphere is peaceful and authentic, and the monks and everyone running the temple were warm and welcoming. The food was unforgettable. It was prepared by a chef over 80 years old, and every detail was thoughtfully crafted – honestly some of the most memorable and special meals we had in Japan. The morning Buddhist ceremony in the temple was a moving and unique experience, adding even more depth to the stay. Even in December, everything was warm and cozy, and we really wished we could have stayed longer. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a deeply unique and unforgettable experience in Japan.

“Very special experience that we won’t forget”
The temple is extraordinarily beautiful. The vegan dinner and breakfast were delicious, so delicate and presented like works of art. The chef is 81 y/o so we felt fortunate to enjoy his cooking. It was very clean, the staff were friendly.
