The place is great to learn kite surfing, but the accommodation is extremely basic and absolutely overpriced for the rooms you get. Food is good but expensive but no alternatives in the area

We had a great stay at De Silva Kite resort. The staff were lovely and couldn’t do enough to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Location is great, right on the lagoon if you are there for watersports. If some of you aren’t boarding, you can still join the boat and go across the lagoon to the main beach. The staff at the kite school are very skilled and knowledgeable and look after everything. A big thank you to Baba and the team.

The staff working there are all just the best. The lady at the office helps with everything. Nice food, local and western. Good vibe. Right in front of the lake. New kitesurf equipment, in good conditions.

We were welcomed nicely by Nalika, the only female staff on the property. She made sure we could split our transportation costs from the airport to Kalpitya with another traveller arriving the same date. I stayed together with a friend at De Silva kiteresort. The resort is mainly focused on a german audience due to a German speaking Sri-Lankan owner. The room was very basic, smelled a bit musty, had a fan, small bathroom, and a mosquito net (which was unfortunately broken and dirty). Considering the price we paid each night (50 euro’s), it is surely on the expensive side of the spectrum compared to other resorts in the neighborhood. The food was lovely, however pricy for Sri Lankan standards (8 euro’s for a buffetlunch; 9 euro’s for a cocktail). I took one private kitelesson to kickstart jumping and my friend took a package of kitelessons (beginner). We noticed that it was difficult to grasp a thorough understanding of the teachers due to an English language barrier. Another thing we had never experienced before is the fact they swop teachers up to two times within one lesson which is not always preferable. Having had multiple teachers, if you happen to take lessons at De Silva, make sure to ask for Safris. He was the best teacher we experienced at De Silva. Didactic skills of the other teaches could surely be improved and we wondered if they all were certified. A radio system on a helmet (often used in other countries where I have had lessons) would improve the lessons too for the most effective and efficient way possible. The boat of the lessons for the lagoon leaves around 13:00 pm and returns around 17:00 pm. It is important to know when booking at De Silva there are two properties: the more upscale “Palm Resort” 200 m down the road with a pool and AC, without a restaurant. And the “Kite resort”, where we were staying with a more charming/laid back athmosphere, with a restaurant.

Location is just perfect. You can start start kitesurfing next to resort. Food is really good and the bar is a chill place to enjoy your evening.

The accommodation is perfect for water sports enthusiasts. Everything you need is available - fantastic, new water sports equipment, excellent service, delicious food, wind, a hammock or the pool to relax in after a day on the water. In the evenings, you can unwind at the bar. By the end of September, it was already transitioning into the off-season, but that meant we had the lagoon to ourselves. The cleanliness of the accommodation meets European standards, which is rare in Sri Lanka. Highly recommended! We had a wonderful time!!

My trip to Sri Lanka, Kalpitiya was purely for Kitesurfing. Hence I have chosen best Team in this area to make my Kitesurfing holidays special. I spent in De Silva resort over 1 month in total. Absolutely fantastic atmosphere, great bar, kind and helpful staff, always with positive energy and smile. Special thanks to Nalika, she was always happy to help and support. If you need anything from arranging bus/ taxi to visit for example Sigiriya (Lion Rock); Kandy, Ella or wish to take Kitesurfing private lesson, rent kite equipment, need Sri Lanka SIM card ask for Nalika straightaway. She will fix this for you. Extremely kind person. De Silva has 2 resorts, the main one with the bar which is located just in front of the big lagoon. Including the main restaurant and chill area with WiFi. Most social life is happening in this resort, hence I would recommend to select this option. The second resort is approximately 10 minutes walk. With great and modern swimming pool. If you prefer more quiet place with less people this is your destination. Just bear in mind, there is no restaurant there. Meaning you will have to walk 3 times per day to Main (1st resort), it's only 10 minutes walk so should not be a problem. The biggest advantage of De Silva is the team who knows Kitesurfing, they are North distributor. Hence they do have North Kitesurfing equipment - NEW collection, as well the shop. I bought myself New North Kite "Orbit". To get good price speak with the owner - Upul. Super friendly person with huge sense of humour. I am sure you will get good offer. Now for anyone thinking about travelling by Train from Kandy to Ella. Take 1st class and don't even think about 2nd or 3rd. I went by 3rd class. It was Independence day in Sri Lanka. It was disaster! The train was packed. I was not able to move literally!! I felt like a canned sardine!! By the end of the journey the engine of the locomotive broke down.

If you are planning your Kitesurfing holidays in Kalpitiya like me. De Silva should be your destination. They have all Kitesurfing equipment you need (brand new Noth Kites) plus service in case something would happen with your kite. The boat will take you straight from the resort into Big lagoon. Everything is well and professionally organized. Special thanks goes to the owner Upul, Kathy and Upul right hand Nalika 😉 as well entire De Silva Crew for making my stay fantastic. All my needs and expectations were fullfield. Always get the help I needed. The friendly attitude of the staff makes De Silva unique place on the map of Kalpitiya for Us Kitesurfers. I strongly recommend to take the food from the bar - Al carte menu. Grilled prawns - 1650 RS; Grilled Tuna Steak 1600 RS, Grilled Cuttlefish 1475 RS or De Silva Sandwich 750 RS. As a guest you also have free access to 2nd De Silva resort with beautiful and modern swimming pool. Strongly recommend to check this 😉 as well. At Kalpitiya you kite on the main big lagoon, but just on the opposite side you have the Ocean! De Silva will organise for you downwind in the Ocean with the safety boat behind you for double security and your own comfort. Swimming in the Ocean is great activity too for your cardio. This is my 1st visit in Sri Lanka, but for sure not the last.
