I really enjoyed my staying here. Unfortunetly just one night and alone. This is a perfect place to spend at least some days in a group. I hope I have the chance to do this one day. The house is mainly home made but everything you need is there. The host even left me some snacks and small food for the night. I enjoyed the silence of the morning and I have slept like a baby. Even if it's not the clean fancy place some people may search, in my opinion for a Kumano Kodo hiker this is the place to be! Countryside mountain Japan vibes! Thank you a lot for it!

“Do not visit, not clean and unsafe”

We unfortunately had a terrible experience that made us feel unsafe. In general, the place has recently changed ownership, so old (positive) reviews that can be found online are no longer valid. The new owner clearly does not really care for the place. It is dirty, dusty and just not taken care of. Worst of all, there was a strong smell of gas around the house. The owner said that this is from the kerosine generator and that it is safe, but we did not feel comfortable sleeping in a house that smells like gas, as this would clearly not be good for ones health and dangerous even. The house also does not have locks. Whilst the Japanese countryside is of course safe, we had a negative experience. At one point a man on a motorbike showed up at the house, put his belongings on the porch, and stayed in the front yard for at least half an hour waiting for the owner (who did not show up). We decided to take our losses and take the last bus out of the place as we did not feel safe or comfortable. In terms location, there are only a few buses per day that go to this guest house (around 6 I believe), which is located very far from the Hongu Taisha. When booking, it looked close on the map, but it is not. It would take quite some hours to hike there along a busy road. Therefore you need to very carefully plan the bus or drive. Despite multiple attempts to reach a compromise with the owner, the owner refused to offer a refund. In fact, the owner kept the cash we had given him for getting us breakfast the next day. I have waited a couple of weeks to write this review, but want to sincerely warn others against staying at this place.

“Back to basics. Relaxed, great place.”

A great rural stay. Perfect for exploring the surrounding areas; Kumano Hongo Taisha, Nachi etc. Back to basics; solar power for basic electricity, wood-fired boiler for hot water, composting toilet and no TV, all you need. Quiet, relaxed place with a great, relaxed host, Aki. House was cool when we stay in early May. The (long term) renovation project is ongoing outside which could do with a bit of a tidy. But we'd definitely stay again with two young children. Great old style kitchen which could do with a bit of clean and dust - we rinsed things before using but fine.
