Featuring a stargazing observatory on site, this luxury hotel is in an idyllic remote location next to the Rangá salmon river in Hella. The hotel offers wake-up calls for when the Northern Lights appear and turns off all lighting for the viewing experience. Guests can also enjoy outdoor hot tubs and free WiFi. Hotel Rangá offers individually decorated rooms with impressive views of the surroundings including Mount Hekla or the riverside. Guests can choose rooms with such items as a spa bath, balcony and flat-screen TV. At Rangá’s restaurant, views of the riverside and Eyjafjallajökull volcano can be admired while tasting local gourmet cuisine with Nordic nuances. Fresh organic produce is used. Staff will gladly help arrange activities in the area. Hella and Hvolsvöllur are both within 8 km of the hotel, while Selfoss is 45 km away. Reykjavik is 2-hours away by car.

Arriving at the Hotel Ranga felt exciting - driving through the gates, the vast expanse of beautiful scenery and sense of remoteness. The hotel feels cosy, rustic and authentic - if a little dated. The rooms backed onto two hot tubs which we made good use of - running from the room through the snow to the hot tub where we soaked in the scenery from the warmth of the tub. The restaurant was excellent, staff were very attentive and flexible - the kids could eat from the bar menu in the main restaurant, they let us sit at the tables before service to enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets. The observatory was fun - navigating your way through the snow in the dark, following the red lights and being given a private tour of the skies. We saw the Northern Lights twice during our stay - the Aurora wake up service was great.

There is just one word which encapsulates Hotel Ranga. That is; exceptional. Throughout our stay we were able to enjoy a range of first class food at every meal, be that breakfast, bar meals or a la carte menu. Our dietary requirements were easily catered for and personalised accordingly by meeting the head chef and visiting the kitchen. The staff made us very so very welcome and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are spacious, luxurious and spotless. The atmosphere in the hotel is relaxed, calm and decadent. The location of the hotel is perfect for those wishing to enjoy peaceful dark skies and travel around beautiful, dramatic Iceland. We cannot recommend highly enough for those looking for an exceptional hotel.

Everything! Beautiful setup, country lodge. Exceptional staff and customer care. Food and service were excellent. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. We had snow overnight and staff cleared the snow off all the cars ready for people to go out for the day. Can’t wait to go back in the future.

Hotel Ranga is truly a one-of-a-kind place. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed — the owner personally greeted guests, there were welcome drinks, handwritten greeting cards, and even a direct phone line in the room to listen to Icelandic poetry! The hotel’s cozy, characterful design is full of thoughtful details that create a warm and memorable atmosphere. The staff were exceptional — always polite, helpful, and attentive, including the housekeeping team. Our bed was incredibly comfortable, with a variety of pillow types to choose from, and we were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary room upgrade. Having a private entrance directly to the outside turned out to be a very practical feature during our stay. The location was exactly what we hoped for: remote, peaceful, and surrounded by beautiful open landscapes — yet still well-placed for day trips, being about an hour from both Vík and iconic spots like Geysir, the volcanic crater, and one of Iceland’s major waterfalls. A quiet river runs near the property, and we often spotted swans drifting nearby — a lovely bonus. Breakfast deserves a special mention. The selection was impressive, but more importantly, every item was of excellent quality and clearly chosen with care. It’s rare to find a place where so much thought is put into every detail — from design to service to dining. We would absolutely return and can wholeheartedly recommend Ranga to anyone seeking a peaceful, atmospheric stay with outstanding service.
