A magical place for birdwatching on the water. The owner Douglas can provide excellent English speaking guides or do trips himself. We took a three hour kayaking trip, night walk and early morning three hour guided boat trip.Nothing is too much trouble for him. The accommodation was spacious and very clean , set in beautifully maintained gardens which attracted the birds. Very quiet at night. Cabins have AC. Douglas can provide a substantial breakfast and there is an excellent restaurant for lunch and dinner next door.

“A phenomenal stay - a must visit!”

My stay here was spectacular. I really rate the eco lodge experience as they are small family owned local businesses that support other local businesses. Douglas and Jacob live and breathe the local lagoon and are absolute experts on the area. I saw a phenomenal amount of wildlife and the area is in pristine condition, well-cared for by the locals. This lagoon will astound you and the property backs straight onto the lagoon which is a great experience. I must say, the knowledge Jacob has is exceptional. I went on a river cruise safari, kayaking safari, horse riding and a night tour. Douglas was kind enough to lend me gumboots for the night tour because there was a lot of rain. We saw a Fer De Lance on the night tour and I loved it. A lot of other animals too. The kayaking was fantastic way to see the lagoon! The restaurant next door will provide your meals except for breakfast which is at the property. They were kind enough to provide coffee before our early starts.

The accommodations were a touch rustic but clean and comfortable with AC. They helped us arrange a guided bird boating tour on short notice for the next morning and we got a lot of new birds. They also prepared an early breakfast for us before the tour. There is a nice bar. restaurant complex 40 meters away with active bird feeders and good food as well.

“Wonderful family hotel with beautiful surroundings and many species of birds”

We had an incredible stay at this wonderful family hotel. The surroundings are beautiful and very close to the large wetlands. There was a laguna only a few meters down form our room where we also spotted many species of bird. By taking a boat up the river you can see even more varieties of birds, caimans, and turtles. Cano Negro is one of our favorite places to visit in all of Central America due to its beautiful nature and diversity of birds. We will definitely come back in the future! Noteworthy, the family also offer dinner which was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended!

“A really lovely start to our holiday!”

A very friendly, relaxed, family hotel in a superb location: a short walk to the end of the garden and you are at the lagoon. We spent the first and last hours of every day there watching the incredible bird life. The highlight was a boat tour with Douglas, who has a wide knowledge of birding. we took all our meals in El Fogon restaurant next door. A good varied menu and friendly service.

Douglas and his family were lovely hosts..... The rooms were perfect for us and the location even better! Douglas even went the extra mile and made us breakfast at 5am as we were heading out on a boat trip around Cano Negro.... I mean.... Absolutely amazing. No food in the evening, but a superb restaurant next door meant that that was no hardship.

“Amazing accommodation in Cano Negro”

Great accommodation in Cano Negro. Family who run it is really nice and helpful, there were no problem with anything. The accommodation is really nice, it sits in a large garden which is connected to small lagoon. It is clean, has coffee maker (which is important for me:). Next to the Poponjoche is restaurante Fogon, which has the best meal I ate during our month in Costa Rica. We are birdwatchers so wanted to take the tour on lagoons. We did our search in the village and than decided to take son of owner of Poponjoche as guide since he can speak english. His father who is good bird guide went also with us. We were happy we choose them. Beware, there is NO BUS from Cano Negro to Upala or Los Chiles on Sunday!!! And taxi can get really expensive on this day.

if you like the great outdoors this is the place for you. wonderful family welcome. NOTHING was too much trouble - they helped us organise activities with very little notice!! kayaking and horse riding in National park just amazing. very relaxed atmosphere. The best!

The bed in the accommodation was good and the room had sufficient space. The shower was good and had hot water throughout the visit. There was no coffee making facilities when we arrived but when we raised the issue the host quickly supplied a coffee machine. The WiFi was accessible from our room and had good reception during our stay. The accommodation is also next door to a good restaurant.
