“Check the pet fee policy before booking”

We booked this apartment for 5 nights while our house was under floor renovation, and I was extremely dissatisfied with the experience. The listing says “pets are allowed. Charges may apply”, but less than 24 hours before check-in, when I informed the host we’d be bringing a small dog, they sent me a link demanding a $250 pet cleaning fee. This is unreasonable — for comparison, a 7-day stay with a pet at Sheraton costs only $50. Since the booking was non-refundable, I felt trapped and had no choice but to proceed. The apartment itself was in a nice, quiet area and generally okay, but the window A/C unit was very noisy, the dishwasher had issues closing properly, the bedlinen was synthetic and uncomfortable, and the sofa advertised as a sleeping place was actually just a mattress on the floor. Overall, I felt misled and disappointed. I strongly recommend checking pet policies with the host before booking, as the hidden fees can be outrageous.
