On the day of departure, the landlady messaged us via the Booking.com chat asking us to call her. We did so, and in a mix of English and German she told us that she would send us an SMS with the address where we should go. The address she sent was on the way to our booked accommodation, approximately 15 km from the final destination. We therefore assumed that she wanted to hand over the keys to the apartment. Upon arriving at the address from the SMS, we were told that we could not be accommodated in the apartment we had booked and already paid for, allegedly because there was no electricity. The landlady then offered us accommodation in a house located at the address from the SMS. However, the house did not meet the conditions of our booking at all. It was, at first glance, a typical family house with several residential units. The surroundings were very busy, with people constantly entering and leaving the house, and a melody from what appeared to be a security system installed near the entrance door kept playing repeatedly in a loop. We waited outside the house for a long time before someone informed us which apartment unit we were supposed to stay in. Once we were finally told, it again took a long time to find the correct key to the entrance door. When the key was finally found, it took several minutes to unlock the door, as it was allegedly damaged due to rain. When we eventually entered the apartment unit, we were shocked. The premises were very old and dirty; blankets were hanging on the windows and doors (apparently as insulation and for blackout purposes). One wall was dented in one place, another wall was dirty, and in the hallway there was a visibly dirty sofa with a pile of other people’s belongings (travel bags, clothes, shoes, etc.).
