We had a wonderful stay for 3 nights at this hotel. Everything was perfect from start to finish. The hotel offers an amazing view, the rooms were spotless and very well maintained, and the staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly throughout our stay. A special thank you to Juan, the restaurant waiter, who clearly loves his job and made our experience even better. He gave us some excellent recommendations that really enhanced our trip. We highly recommend this establishment and would gladly stay here again.

Great swimming pool, beautiful views, perfect sunset by the pool! Spacious and very clean rooms, idem dito for the bathroom. Good breakfast; everything you need. Friendly staff. The hotel has their own (free) parking lot, which is a luxury on the hard-to-park-your-car-island of Madeira.

“Relaxing stay and great food”

We had a good experience. The room was comfortable. We had a great view of the Ocean from the room, it was wonderful. Breakfast was good. We ate dinner at the restaurant twice - the food was delicious both times.

Engenho Velho has a warm, sunny location with panoramic views. Its excellent swimming pool facilities provide safe swimming and gardens. Engenho Velho has an excellent restaurant menu. It has a great range of tasty local starters, main courses and desserts. Specialised in local fish. Traditional bar drinks were excellent. Service excellent. Regarded as the best restaurant in the area. There are Pleasant hillside walks in the hills above to local villages. Hill-top cafe with panoramic views. Birds and wildlife for nature lovers. Calheta has 2 beaches below with beach bars, supervised swimming 9 months of the year. It has a large Supermarket and shops. Marina provides marine activities, whale and dolphin tours. Pick-up for island tours. Bus service.

“Lovely small hotel with a great view”

Lovely peaceful hotel with great views from all rooms, and a well maintained pool. The rooms are a good size and well designed. A car is needed, there is not really anything within easy walking distance. There are staff available at the restaurant if you need them, otherwise as it is only a 10 room hotel it is very quiet, you don't tend to see staff. This suited us, we wanted a quiet location.

“Stunning views , quiet location”

Stunning location, off the beaten track for real relaxation and chill out time . Rooms are nice and big and have a fridge/freezer so very good for snacks and water. The portion sizes for dinner are great and very generous . Calheta town is 5 minute drive and has a good supermarket and pharmacy and several restaurants on the marina side and a lovely beach. Definitely need a car when staying here . Also there is toilets and showers with changing rooms just off the pool area so great for check out day if you have a later flight .

We chose the Engenho Velho SOLELY because it is adults only - like MOST adults we are not travelling with kids; and do NOT enjoy being disturbed by them. Congratulations to the Engenho Velho for realising "adults only" is the fastest growing and most profitable sector of the market (kids add massive overheads for little or no revenue.) The Engenho Velho impressed at every level - It's outstanding as a place to stay: great facilities, high quality, well equipped rooms, great location.

We stayed at Engenho Velho Hotel & Restaurante – Adults Only from the 6th to the 13th of July, and honestly, we didn’t want to leave! The room was spotless and super comfy, with a view that made us feel like we were living in a postcard. The bathroom? Sparkling clean and had everything we needed—no complaints there. Breakfast was a daily highlight: a full English with some tasty extras, and to my delight, they had almond milk! That meant I could enjoy my morning coffee without compromise—small win, big happiness. Now, let’s talk about the restaurant. The food was great, but the service? Even better. One name to remember: Miguel. Not only was he incredibly helpful and attentive, but he was also very easy on the eyes. Seriously, Miguel deserves a raise and a modeling contract. He went above and beyond to make sure we were happy, and thanks to him, our stay was extra special. The whole vibe of the hotel was peaceful and relaxing—exactly what we needed. If you're looking for a quiet, adults-only escape with great food, amazing views, and a charming staff (did I mention Miguel?), this place is a gem.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a good spacious room with a balcony and a seaview out over the pool and garden. Breakfast was good with many hot and cold options, although the coffee was not great. It is a short 5 minute drive down to the marina where there is an excellent choice of places to eat offering a bit more atmosphere.
