“A great, peaceful, relaxing property from which to explore Portugal in and around the Lisbon region.”

A truly positive experience at a wonderful property with fantastic hosts. When you make a booking at Quinta do Casal de Santo Antonio, you are renting a relatively small cottage (as described) in the grounds of a beautiful and expansive property comprising a number of buildings - where various generations of the host family reside - including a small family chapel. Guests are welcome to roam around the gardens and use the lovely swimming pool at the heart of the site (we had it all to ourselves whenever we used it). We stayed for five days at the beginning of July, it was hot of course but not super crazy hot and the temperature within the cottage itself was always comfortable (thick stone walls, etc.). We're a family of two adults and one child, the cottage is designed for no more than four adults in two double/twin rooms. I think another reviewer described the property overall as tranquil, I would agree with that, with birdsong during the day providing an extra connection with nature. Some of the time we just hung loose at the Quinta, but the rest of the time we visited various destinations, all within about an hour or so's drive: Sintra, Ericeira, Nazaré, Cascais and Lisbon. So it's a great place to base yourself and from which to explore, provided you have transport. The Portuguese motorways are great, you pay some moderate tolls but they are of a really high quality. Plenty of shops and restaurant options in both Alenquer and Carregado (nearby towns) but again a car is needed to reach them. We did also use the in-cottage kitchenette for a couple of dinners. If you are staying for a longer duration, be aware that there is no WM in the cottage but there are various launderettes nearby - we found an unmanned, automated 24/7 one in Carregado. Overall, we loved our stay and would not hesitate to recommend the property, with an extra shout out to the host family, who could not have been more welcoming, informative and friendly.

We spent two days at Joao and his family’s house, and it was a pleasant experience sharing time with them. They are always ready to help if you want to make a restaurant reservation or get suggestions for things to do in Lisbon. The house has everything. I don’t remember if there was a coffee machine, but we always had breakfast out. The house is family-friendly. It’s an old ground-floor home. The walls are very thick, so I assume it stays cool in the summer, but I visited during the winter, and the big plus of the house is the wall radiators, which have become rare in Portugal. They were nice and warm and managed to heat the entire house. There’s also a lovely pool for the summer. The tranquility is unparalleled. You can enjoy the silence of the countryside while still being just half an hour away from Lisbon’s main attractions. We will definitely return.

Joao was the most welcoming and pleasant host! His property was stunning and an ideal place for us to base ourselves when attending a wedding at Solar de Pancas.

A unique, historic and fantastic property to spend a week in, which was extremely peaceful and tranquil. Location is in a small village, but only a 5 min drive to shops, supermarket and easy access to the motorway network. We visited Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Mafra, Ericeria, Santarem, all of which are within a 45 mins drive. Jaoa and family were all very friendly and full of helpful advice, whilst being very respectful of us being next to their family home and swimming pool.

Joao and his family were great hosts. It was a stunning property will a lot of history , huge gardens to roam around in and a lovely swimming pool (which we didn’t have time to use). It took us about 50 minutes to get to Lisbon( though we knew it wasn’t close when we booked) as the route travels very close to the airport and there was a lot of traffic. However Joao suggested a car park just out of Lisbon with metro attached and it was easy going from there. A large supermarket nearby is very convenient.

Superb historical house in the heart of Alenquer. João was a fantastic host. Parking available on premises and the house is a 5 min drive to supermarkets.
